Microsoft’s KUMO, Is that really a new search engine?
Microsoft is planning to introduce a new search engine named Kumo. Kumo in japanese language means cloud or spider, this search engine rumored to be replaced Microsoft’s Live Search that soon will be re-branded. Kumo based on technology from its Barney Pell’s Powerset acquisition. Microsoft confirmed,
“Microsoft is using the Kumo.com URL for internal testing purposes only”
.
Microsoft already have an internal testing for Kumo. According to microsoft, In spite of the progress made by search engines, 40 percent of queries go unanswered, half of queries are about searchers returning to previous tasks and 46 percent of search sessions are longer than 20 minutes. These and many other learnings suggest that customers often don’t find what they need from search today.
Reported to Whois.Net, Microsoft has registered the kumo.com domain, and through CSC, a company that manages domain names for corporations, also has registered related domains that indicate the Kumo name could be used for other services. Those domains include: www.kumosearch.com, www.kumopics.com, www.kumowiki.com, www.kumogroups.com and www.kumotravel.com. However, the Microsoft company has been rumored for some time to be renaming its Live Search “Kumo” based on a December trademark application it made for the name and related URLs it has registered.
Kumo is separate from another search tool being offered to employees by Microsoft Research. That tool, shown last week at TechFest and known as Viveri, uses the Live Search engine in combination with new visualization and vertical search technologies.
“They are different but they are complimentary”
, said the Microsoft Representatives.
